Woman dies, driver injured in James City County crash

A 61-year-old James City County woman was killed Tuesday night when the car she was riding in drove into a ditch, James City County police said.

Astrid Wagenaar-Otey was one of two people found in a Ford Taurus that had crashed in the 4600 block of Fenton Mill Road, according to a news release. She was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

According to the news release, investigators believe the Ford Taurus was traveling westbound on Fenton Mill Road in "low-visibility conditions" about 9 p.m. when the driver encountered a stationary Ford Escape stopped in the westbound lane and facing the wrong the direction with its headlights on. Police said the driver of the Taurus tried to avoid a head-on collision, swerved and left the road, sideswiping the Escape before ending up in a ditch.

The news release did not provide any information about the Escape and its driver. The crash remains under investigation.
