Illegal fireworks lit up Sacramento for New Year's in 2025, but complaints were down

Illegal fireworks celebrating the new year lit up the Sacramento area early Wednesday, sky camera footage showed.

But all things considered, 2025's illegal fireworks display was more subdued than celebrations for 2024.

Sacramento Metro Fire officials said the district received 13 fireworks complaints overnight. That was a 40% decrease over the same holiday period a year ago.

There were also no fireworks-related fires or injuries for the fourth year in a row, Sac Metro Fire said.

During the New Year's holiday, all fireworks, even those listed as safe and sane, are illegal.

People using them face the prospect of fines that range from $1,000 to around $50,000, officials said.

Meanwhile, thousands of people took in a legal fireworks display by attending "Countdown on the Cobblestones" along the Old Sacramento Waterfront.
