The actress behind Elphaba revealed that she worked with the musical's original songwriter, Stephen Schwartz, to pen a new track for Wicked: For Good in a new episode of Variety's Awards Circuit podcast. "We definitely had some collaboration on my one," Erivo said.
The actress indicated that the song may have a strong emotional effect on the audience. "I don't know if you're ready for it," she said on the podcast. "I mean, I love the song and I remember when we filmed it, the cast and crew were crying. So I don't know. And I don't know if that's just because they were emotional that day or that's what the song does."
She continued, "I feel like the song is very, very special. I don't want to give you any more than that." Though she didn't reveal what the song is called, she teased, "I have a feeling that even the title will move you."
Wicked's first part, which is currently playing in theaters, did not add any new songs in its adaptation of the first act of the 2003 musical. The sequel, Wicked: For Good, will hit theaters on Nov. 21, 2025 -- and Erivo confirmed in addition to Elphaba's new song, the sequel will also feature another original song that will primarily be sung by Ariana Grande's Glinda.
Fans were initially divided on the decision to split Wicked into two separate movies prior to Wicked: Part One's release. Erivo praised the decision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, noting that the extra time allowed the on-screen relationships to develop in a way that they couldn't in just one movie. "You can follow these women behind the scenes a little bit more, and you get to learn about the two of them," she said. "We've expanded on their relationship as friends. That's a really important special thing that you have in the show, but here you really get to go with them in that. We've got something really special."
Meanwhile, director Jon M. Chu teased Wicked: For Good in another interview with EW. "There's a lot of soul searching in movie 2," he said. "They're asking, 'Is this the right decision that you made?'"
The filmmaker noted that the movie will embrace the second act's darker material, but won't forgo the inherent fun of the musical genre. "There is lots of lightness in the movie," Chu said. "There's a lot of fun parts. We've not forgotten about that, but there's a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity]."

Elsewhere in the Awards Circuit interview, Erivo confirmed that she's planning on releasing a solo album before the next Wicked movie arrives. "It's been written. It's ready. It's coming for you next year," she said. "I feel like it's pretty eclectic, but it's my voice and it's vocal-forward. So it just sort of happened that way. My brain works very weirdly. So a lot of the, you'll hear in some of the music, well, all of the music, that a lot of the background, a lot of the musical padding is my voice. So I've used my voice like an instrument, but there are flecks of soul, there are flecks of country, there are flecks of pop, you know. It's this stuff that I have listened to my whole life."
