For the second straight season, the Blue Devils' starting quarterback is moving on.
Duke football's Maalik Murphy is reportedly entering the transfer portal, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. According to the report, Murphy will not play in Duke's TaxSlayer Gator Bowl against Ole Miss Jan. 2, and he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Murphy transferred to Durham from Texas, where he started two games in relief for Quinn Ewers. He was a highly-touted prospect out of the portal, and he committed to the Blue Devils last December.
The signal caller broke the program record for touchdowns in a single season with 26, and threw for 2,933 yards on the year. The Inglewood, Calif., native helped lead Duke to a 9-3 record, most recently completing a last-second touchdown throw in the Blue Devils' regular-season finale against Wake Forest. He also struggled at times with consistency, recording 12 interceptions and a 60.3% completion percentage.
Grayson Loftis and Henry Belin IV, who both earned starts last season, will likely compete for the starting spot against the Rebels.
The program did not immediately respond to The Chronicle's request for comment by the time of publication.
