New Haven family among those injured in wrong-way crash in Rye Brook, police say

A family from New Haven was among those injured after being hit by a wrong-way driver on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Rye Brook, N.Y., early Monday, according to police.

The family of five was taken to Westchester Medical Center and their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, said Westchester County Police Chief James Luciano in a news conference Monday.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, identified as 75-year-old Rye Brook resident Joan Feinstein, was in critical condition but is likely to survive, according to Luciano. Feinstein is the former mayor of Rye Brook, serving from 2008 to 2013, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight Monday. Luciano said Feinstein was driving a 2024 Mercedes sedan south in the northbound lanes of the Hutchinson River Parkway when she collided with a 2018 Dodge Durango.

The driver of the Durango was identified as a 49-year-old New Haven man. The passenger was his wife, aged 46, and their three children, ages 25, 17 and 12, were sitting in the backseat, according to Luciano.

The Hutchinson River Parkway was closed for multiple hours, but reopened around 7 a.m., Luciano said.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Luciano noted that officers were not able to obtain statements at the scene due to the serious natures of the injuries.

Luciano added that the preliminary investigation revealed that alcohol was not involved in this case.
