On Tuesday, the Tuscaloosa Salvation Army revealed that the organization has been struggling to meet its annual Red Kettle Campaign fundraiser goal of $80,000.
"With just days left before Christmas, The Salvation Army is seeking community support to reach its Red Kettle Campaign goal for 2024. As the organization's primary annual fundraiser, the Red Kettle Campaign provides essential resources to support programs that change lives year-round. Currently, donations are behind the goal of $80,000. So far, the organization has only raised about $57,000," reads the organization's official press release.
According to the Salvation Army's official website, the Red Kettle tradition began in San Francisco, CA, in 1891, with the intention of raising money to feed the less fortunate for Christmas. Volunteers place red kettles outside local storefronts from November through Christmas Eve, encouraging others to donate money to the kettles, or volunteer themselves, in order to raise money for various social services.
Since its founding, the Red Kettle Campaign has spread across the world, with The Salvation Army continuing to raise money for those in need around the holidays. This year, the national campaign hopes to raise over $2 million.
"This year has been especially tough for many individuals and families in our community," said Michael Chisolm, Captain of the Tuscaloosa Salvation Army. "With challenges like food, gas, and utilities, we continue to see an increased need for our services. As we approach the final stretch of the season, we are hopeful the community will rally behind us to ensure we can continue offering vital assistance to those in need."
"Our community's generosity is truly inspiring," Chisolm added. "Every dollar donated stays right here in our area."
The press release encourages members of the Tuscaloosa community to continue donating and volunteering so that the campaign can meet its fundraising goal.
"The Salvation Army bells will continue to ring outside stores through Christmas Eve, and the organization remains optimistic that with the community's help, the campaign will reach its goal," it reads.
According to the press release, every year The Salvation Army helps "more than 27.5 million Americans overcome poverty, addiction, and economic hardships through various social services."
"By providing food for the hungry, emergency relief for disaster survivors, rehabilitation for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, and clothing and shelter for people in need, The Salvation Army is doing the most good at nearly 6,400 centers of operation nationwide."
Individuals interested in volunteering with the organization can do so by calling 205-632-3681. The organization also collects donations online through their Virtual Red Kettle.
