'Shop with a Cop' event brings both N. Charleston Police and kids together

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Earlier this morning, several North Charleston cop cars drove down Dorchester Road with their lights and sirens as part of the Shop with a Cop.

Over 60 kids were selected from surrounding schools for a day of Christmas shopping at Walmart with North Charleston police.

All parties involved said the event impacted them greatly, whether they were an officer, the kids themselves or the Walmart employees.

"It chokes me up watching their faces coming in knowing they may not have anything, and seeing all the smiles. It's amazing, it makes us feel good, we enjoy it, this is my favorite time every year," Walmart team leader, Shelly Burch says.

Burch says she looks forward to this event every year because of how it makes them feel.

The coordinator, Sergeant James Camp, says he loves to see his brothers and sisters in blue give back to the kids who are in need.

"My officers need to understand that these kids in our community need them, and it's not just on Christmas, it's every day," Camp says.

Ron Camacho, the new Chief of Police of the North Charleston Police Department, says that as their leader, one of their priorities is being part of the community.

He says this shows the kids that they have a friend in the police department, not an enemy.

"Why it's important is we have to constantly work to build our relationship with the public, alright? The police are the public, and the public are the police," Camacho says.

Each child was selected by their school guidance counselor based on the child's needs and character.

Burch says she gets to see kids who look out for their families and know the meaning of Christmas.

"We see them, they'll buy groceries, or 'I want something for my mom, I want something for my day,' they're just thinking about everybody," she says.

This year was the biggest turnout since Covid four years ago. Camp says they look forward to this every holiday season as this is their 13th year.
