Transfer CB, Former Tiger Talks 'Great' Visit to Big 12 School

A former Clemson Tiger is once again looking for a new college home.

Former Clemson cornerback Fred Davis recently decided to re-enter the NCAA transfer portal. He spent the 2024 season at Jacksonville State, following a year at UCF in 2023 and three seasons at Clemson from 2020-22.

Davis, a redshirt junior from Jacksonville, Fla., has one year of eligibility left. The 6-foot-1, 192-pounder took an official visit to West Virginia last weekend.

In an interview with EerSports, Davis discussed that visit and what he knows about Rich Rodriguez, who returned to WVU as its next head coach. Rodriguez was most recently Jacksonville State's head coach from 2022-24, and so Davis played for Rodriguez this season.

"The visit was great," Davis said. "What stood out was the scenery and how much of a college town it is. The fans are very passionate."

"I know I will be coached hard and cared for here," Davis added. "I know from personal experience at Jax State what Coach Rich Rod has planned for WVU."

A former four-star and top-100 national prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, Davis originally signed with Clemson back in December 2019 and enrolled the following January. Prior to entering the portal in December 2022, he was credited with 32 tackles (1.5 for loss), four pass breakups and a fumble recovery over 27 career games (four starts) during his three-year career as a Tiger.

After playing in two games at UCF during his lone season there in 2023, Davis tallied 18 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and four passes defended in 14 games at Jacksonville State this year.
