SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) - Happy Tuesday, Utah! We've had ample sunshine this morning with frosty temperatures statewide. A weak system is sliding through central Utah on this New Year's Eve, bringing a few more clouds to the Beehive State.
Overall, expect calm weather with temperatures close to normal for this time of year. Calm weather will continue into the evening keeping weather impacts to a minimum for Utahns heading out to ring in the New Year. The biggest impact will be the cold temperatures, so make sure you bundle up this evening before heading out.
On New Year's Day, the westerly flow will start pulling in some moisture, mainly over northern Utah. A storm system will graze the area into early Thursday, bringing more clouds, mild temperatures, and some snow in the northern mountains. A little rain, if not a wintry mix, might hit the nearby valleys too.
Any leftover precipitation wraps up Thursday morning. Light snow might linger in northern mountain spots with good northwest flow. After that, it warms up through Friday, with highs running 5-15° above normal. Precipitation chances will stay pretty low, though a stray shower could pop up near the Idaho border.
Saturday brings the next system, as moisture from a decaying atmospheric river moves in. Expect increasing rain and snow chances on Saturday, with the cold front upping those chances later in the day. Northern mountains could see solid snow accumulations of around 2-6 inches, maybe up to 6-12 inches in some spots. Lower elevations aren't likely to get much snow, but mountain routes could get slick, so plan ahead if you're driving. Stay tuned.
