Apple is planning to revamp the Magic Mouse in the next few years. The current design is over 15 years old, introduced back in 2009.
Since then, the Magic Mouse received minor upgrades, including the switch to an oddly-located Lightning port and, eventually, USB-C.
The Magic Mouse is not the most ergonomic or feature-rich mouse on the market. Cult of Mac's Griffin D. Jones said this in his Magic Mouse (USB-C) review: "In a similar way, the Magic Mouse is rightly derided for failing to understand its users. Specifically, their hands. It just isn't comfortable."
In recent years, Apple's mouse gained more fame for its charging port being located on the bottom than anything else. The odd charging port placement means you cannot use the Magic Mouse while on charge.
In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a significant Magic Mouse redesign. According to Gurman, Apple engineers are currently testing multiple prototypes, "aiming to devise something that better fits the modern era."
Apple's next Magic Mouse might sport a design better suited for today's computers, making it easy to use gestures, voice commands, and more. As part of the redesign, Apple will reportedly also move the charging port to a better location.
Sadly, there's a long wait ahead for the new Magic Mouse. Gurman says it won't arrive in the next 12-18 months. Apple's engineers internally are yet to settle on the final design. And even after that, there will be "months or years of hardware engineering, software development and operations work."
Based on the report, it's clear that the new Magic Mouse is not going to come anytime soon. The only good news is that Apple is working on overhauling the mouse.
