Plans for Dexter to become a Yellowstone style franchise seem to be falling into place, as the previously announced Trinity Killer prequel series is seemingly moving forward. Dexter: Original Sin has proven once again that there is new life in Dexter yet, as the prequel series about everyone's favorite killer has been breaking records for Showtime. According to a new report by Deadline, the next addition to the franchise is still very much "in development," and will have Dexter veterans Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds serving as co-creators and executive producers.
The Trinity Killer was played by John Lithgow in the original series of Dexter, and he reprised the role briefly in Dexter: New Blood. Back in 2023 it was announced that a prequel series was being considered. There were some big plans being put in place for Dexter, which was strange considering the show originally ended in 2013, and New Blood saw a reasonably successful return falter with its finale.
However, that finale, no matter how divisive, was the most-watched episode in Showtime's history, which led to a push for more stories set in the Dexter universe. This led to a change in tactics - considering Dexter was (at least at the time) very much out of the picture after New Blood - and attention turned to flipping the story the other way. Phillips previously said:
"We wrote all 10 episodes of the sequel, and then Chris McCarthy from MTV Entertainment and Paramount came on board and said, 'I'm not in the sequel business, I'm in the prequel business.' Because he had done Yellowstone [prequels] 1883 and 1923. So Chris said, 'Can you come up with a prequel in two weeks?'"
The Trinity Killer Prequel Seemed to Be On Hold Close
Before Dexter: Original Sin shattered records with its debut episode, Dexter: Resurrection was already deep in development. That will be another sequel series, following up on the events of New Blood and discarding premature beliefs that Dexter was dead after being shot and left for dead by his son - yes, all those who had issues with him dying can rejoice. However, Phillips suggested while on the New Blood press tour that the Trinity Killer prequel was on hold. He said:
"We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series. At the moment, it is on the back burner. John Lithgow has agreed to be the voice of his younger self the way Michael Hall is doing for [Original Sin]. There's that and we're doing another show with Michael C. Hall, [Resurrection]... We were writing that while shooting Original Sin, so that's fairly busy. We begin shooting [Resurrection] in January and it will air in June 2025."

Perhaps with Original Sin being so well received, Showtime wants to strike while the iron is hot and run with as many spinoffs as they can. If this is the case, we can probably expect to see the Trinity Killer prequel picking up speed in the next few months. Meanwhile, Dexter: Original Sin is currently releasing new episodes on Showtime and Paramount +.
