A grand jury has reviewed evidence from an investigation into a police officer's role in a fatal motorcycle crash in Pemberton Borough.

A Deptford Township police officer shot and wounded a man during an incident at a motel here, authorities said.

The shooting occurred after police responded to a complaint of an aggressive man at the Fairfield Inn on the 1100 block of Hurffville Road, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. The guest, 58-year-old Jeffrey Jaworski of Sewell, opened his door for police, then slammed it shut.

Police entered the room with management's assistance. They learned Jaworksi had jumped from his second-floor window and fled on foot.

Jaworski entered a wooded area near the motel, the account said, and told police he had a gun.

Deptford police Sgt. David Grogan fired three shots at Jaworski, who sustained a wound that was not considered life-threatening, according to the statement from the prosecutor's office.

"Jaworski then moved further into the wooded area, jumped over a chain link fence, fled on foot into traffic on Route 42 and was subsequently taken into custody," it said.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. Nov. 28, but was disclosed by the prosecutor's office on Friday, Dec. 13.

Jaworski was treated at an area hospital, then was charged with being a fugitive from justice and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

The charges are only allegations. Jaworski has not been convicted in the case.

The prosecutor's office is continuing to investigate the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call prosecutor's Det. Jordan Plitt at 856-384-5583.
