A chain of six crashes involving over 40 vehicles shut down the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge near New Orleans.
A fatal crash outside an elementary school in Bexar County involved one teacher who was killed and five children injured.
Alexia Rosales, 22, was hit and died on the scene of the crash during pickup hours after a holiday performance at the school, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
The crash occurred at the Excelled Montessori Campus on Thursday. The school is closed, with grief and trauma counselors made available to families and faculty, a school spokesperson stated.
The school is organizing a fundraiser for Rosales' family to help cover funeral costs. The school wrote a statement on the GoFundMe page.
"Yesterday, we experienced an unimaginable loss. Alexia Rosales, a beloved teacher at Excelled Montessori, tragically passed away in an accident at our school. Alexia wasn't just a teacher -- she was family," the statement said.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened just after 4:15 p.m. Thursday in the 27500 block of Interstate 10 near Fair Oaks Ranch Parkway.
After a parent loaded her kids into a vehicle, she accelerated into another car, causing both vehicles to crash through a fence. On the other side, in a playground, the teacher and a group of children were pinned under the car, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
Salazar reported that the five children were transported to the hospital, but their conditions remain unknown. All family members have been notified of the incident.
A spokeswoman for Excelled Montessori stated that another teacher was also injured in the crash and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Salazar mentioned that the driver responsible for the crash may have a medical history that contributed to the incident, though there is no indication of intoxication. It remains unclear whether any charges will be filed against the driver at this time.
