Mahomes sends clear message to Reid after incident in Chiefs win over Chargers

PATRICK MAHOMES sent a confident four-word message to head coach Andy Reid before their great escape against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes promised Reid that he'd come up a clutch - and he did just that by calling a shock pass play to win the AFC West title on Sunday.

At 17-16 down, the quarterback decided to call a pass play after telling head coach Red moments before: "I'll make something happen."

During the drive, the Chiefs faced a third down after the two-minute warning.

Mahomes escaped the visitors' pass rush and picked out Travis Kelce for a vital nine-yard gain and fresh set of downs.

The Chargers didn't touch the ball after that play, before Wright went on to doink a 31-yard field goal in off the post.

And it came as time expired in the fourth quarter of the Week 14 matchup.

Mahomes finished the night with 24 of his 37 passes completed for 210 yards and a touchdown.

However, like opposite number Justin Herbert he was sacked on three occasions amid intense pressure at Arrowhead.

After clinching their divisional title in dramatic fashion, Mahomes said: "It's our first goal every single year, to win the AFC West.

"It's a great division with a lot of rivalries where everybody's playing each other tough and, I mean, three teams are going to probably make the playoffs. That speaks to the division we play in.

"To be able to win this division, to gain another game in the playoff picture, it was an important game for us against a really good football team.

"We found a way to get a win, but now we've got to keep building if we want to get to our ultimate goal."

The Chiefs won their ninth straight AFC West title with the primetime victory.

By orchestrating Kansas City's comeback, Mahomes passed Aaron Rodgers for the most victories by a quarterback whose team scores fewer than 20 points.

Including the playoffs, Mahomes has won 10 games in 127 starts when his team scores under 20 points.

While Rodgers has bagged nine in 258 career starts.

Meanwhile, Mahomes and wife Brittany took some time out from their schedules to spend time with their two kids -- daughter Sterling Skye and son Patrick "Bronze" Lavon Mahomes III.

Brittany shared snaps of the family enjoying ice skating this holiday season on Monday.

The family, all decked in warm winter ensembles, evidently had fun as they were all smiles in the pictures.

Brittany also dropped a series of maternity pictures, as the high school sweethearts prepare to welcome their third child.
